Rappahannock Pistol & Rifle Club

An NRA Gold Medal Club

Shooting

The Club's shooting activities revolve around Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun.  There is a Committee Chair for each activity, who coordinates events and activities and works with interested members.  The following provides a brief highlight of the organized activities.

Pistol

The 25 yard range is the most heavily used range.  Apart from classes and matches, there is no organized activity other than the ladies only pistol clinic held the first Monday of every month at 1000 April through October.  This is for lady members of the Club, and ladies who are spouses or direct family members, subject to Club Guest policy.  Instructors will be on hand IF any assistance is requested.

Shotgun

The shotgun group meet every Wednesday at 0900 during the summer and at 1300 during the winter to use the trap and wobble trap machines.  They also meet every Sunday at 1300.   The Club holds a Novice Trap Clinic the third Wednesday of every month at 1300 April through October. This is also open to spouses & direct family members, subject to Club guest policy. A hand operated quarter cock machine is available for general use, but bring your own birds.  Every two weeks a dedicated group car pool to Providence Forge to shoot sporting clays.

Rifle

The HIGH-POWER group meets at the 100 yard range every Wednesday at 1100 to practice.  High-Power is an enjoyable and challenging target shooting program following rules similar to military marksmanship requirements.  Although initially focused on the training of recruits in the use of military rifles, today's High-Power staging permits almost any iron-sight bolt/semi-auto rifle capable of firing 10 rounds within 60 seconds.  NRA and CMP, among others, conduct High-Power tournaments where regional and national rankings and champions are recognized.

The Club's 100 yard rage is suitable for conducting the High-Power type match by use of regulation NRA Reduced Distance targets that simulate the longer distances found in sanctioned events.  The typical "Practice" High-Power Match conducted at RP&RC begins with four sighting rounds followed by ten rounds each at four targets using four shooting positions with time limitations as outlined below:

 (1)standing/slow-fire (10 minutes);  (2)prone/slow-fire (10 minutes);  (3)standing to prone/rapid-fire (70 seconds);  (4)standing to sitting or kneeling/rapid-fire (60 seconds).

Each shooting string has a 3 minute "prep period" not included in the above.  Match Rules governing the shoot are "relaxed" for those who can't or don't want to strictly "go by the book."  All Club members are welcome to participate.  Any scoring is done by the shooter for one's own benefit.  No records are maintained.
